Death Statistics

Death Statistics KIC allows you to create statistics on Kansas resident deaths (see residency definition) by cause, year, age-group, sex, race, Hispanic origin, and county. Select row and column variables to define the table of results. Use filters in optional step 2 to limit results. The most current year for Death Statistics KIC is 2021. See the Death Statistics Notes and Limitations for more information on this dataset and how it was prepared.

On April 1, 2016, population estimates were updated with the newly released 2000-2009 intercensal population estimates, produced by the U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates program. Introduction of the intercensal estimates could alter any results (rates / percentages) captured prior to April 1, 2016. For more detail, regarding population estimates, see KIC’s Notes & Limitations, section “Population Estimates”.

STEP 1
STEP 2  - OPTIONAL
Choose the variables you want in your table. Certain variables can be limited in your search.
Rows:
  Year
  Age Group
  Race
  Sex
  Hispanic Origin
  Cause of Death
  County / Areas
Columns:
  Year
  Age Group
  Race
  Sex
  Hispanic Origin
  Cause of Death
  County / Areas
Hispanic   Non-Hispanic   Unknown   All
Age Group:
Race:
Sex:
Help & Notes Step 1. If you want see your results by a geographic area, you must select county as a row or column variable. If you want to see statistics broken out by year or other variable, you will need to make that variable a row or column variable. You cannot make a variable both a row or column variable. If you select age-group, there are breakouts possible within some age-groups by clicking on the age-group. Help & Notes Step 2. These selections allow you to filter the resulting table to a specific subcategory. If one of Step 2 variables is also a row or column variable, then applying the filter will have no affect on the output table.
STEP 3
STEP 4 - 4.A & 4.B must be completed
Which year(s) would you like to include in your query? 4.A - Select a button for State, County, Region or Peer Group Statistics.
2000 2001 2002 2003

All Years| Clear All
State    Counties    Kansas Health Preparedness Regions
Geographical Regions (District Offices)    Peer Groups

4.B - Scroll to the above selected category in the list below and select the area or group of areas of interest. NOTE: Area lists will be "greyed out" and non-selectable except for the areas related to the category selected above. To select multiple areas in a give category, hold "Ctrl" Key down while making choices. See "Help & Notes" for further instructions.

NOTE: Counties in a region/group can be determined by viewing the resource maps page.
Help & Notes Step 3. If year is a row or column variable, then the table will display results by single year. If year is not a row or column variable, than the resulting table will aggregate the number of years you check. Data for new years will be added as it becomes available. Help & Notes Step 4. County/area Selections can only be made within the selected category, no cross category selections are allowed. If after viewing prior results you return to the query criteria page by using your browser's back button, the county/area list will be greyed out. To reactivate your selection click once on your original category. Your county/area selection(s) will be restored and ready for use. If another category is wanted, select it and scroll to the active section of the list.
STEP 5
STEP 6
Select which 'Cause of Death' you wish to view from the following list. If you have selected 'Cause of Death' as your row variable, you may select multiple causes by holding down the control key and selecting the ones you want with the mouse pointer.
An asterisk (*) marks causes designatd by the NCHS as rank-able in choosing leading causes of death. A double asterisk (**) mark pairs of causes which together constitute one rank-able cause.
You can pick how you want to view the data:
Frequencies only
Frequencies and Rates (for number of patients)
Help & Notes Step 5. Select which 'Cause of Death' you wish to view from the following list. If you have selected 'Cause of Death' as your row variable, you may select multiple procedures by holding down the control key and selecting the ones you want with the mouse pointer. Help & Notes Step 6. Frequencies is one way of displaying results. Using rates enables one to remove the bias that comes from comparing frequencies from counties or areas of different population. If you plan to compare areas or time periods, then rates or age-adjusted rates should be used. Age-adjusted rates removes the bias of different age-makeups of geographic areas or time periods. This is the best method for comparison.
STEP 7
STEP 8
The following three menus pertain only to rates generated by the query system when "frequencies and rates" is selected in step 6. Your search is ready.  Click the submit button.

** You must select an item from both columns in Step 4 **
Help & Notes Step 7. If you selected frequencies and rates in step 6, you will need to use this section. Crude rates are calculated by default. If you want to use age-adjusted rates select "Age-adjusted Rates." If age-adjusted rates are selected you can choose from the 2000, 1970, or 1940 population standards. The 2000 population standard is default and now is the standard most currently used. However, if you are comparing your findings to a different standard you must use the same standard for your calculation. If you want to calculate confidence intervals for your rates, you can selected 95, 98 or 99 percent confidence intervals. If the confidence intervals of two rates overlap then the difference in them is said to be not statistically significant.
